A Consultant's Agreement

from Strategies EP by New York Endless

about

While the world of commercial EDM is all agog over a rising generation of producers whose age seems to drop every year, Dan Selzer is a walking reminder that some projects take a little longer to develop. Selzer has been a key figure in New York's dance music scene for well over a decade. He used to throw parties with the Rapture at the Lower East Side's beloved Plant Bar, DFA's early, unofficial HQ. With Mike Simonetti, of Italians Do It Better, Selzer put together a funk-and-disco-infused mix CD for RVNG in 2005, under their Crazy Rhythms alias. And since 2002, he's run Acute Records, a reissue label dedicated to post-punk rarities from Theoretical Girls, Glenn Branca, Ike Yard, et al. (Hell, Selzer even designed the sleeve of Metro Area's debut album.) The one thing he had not managed to do in all those years was put out a record of his own, but that changes now.
This month, recording as New York Endless, Selzer finally makes his solo debut with the release of Strategies, a three-track EP for New York's Golf Channel imprint. He covers plenty of ground: The bubbly, naive "A Consultant's Agreement" faintly echoes early Aphex Twin, while the 16-minute "Benefits Arrive (Life Goes On)" imbues spindly grooves and sparkling synths with a wide-eyed sense of optimism, like a New Age take on the Burrell brothers' early New York house. "Scale Those Heights" might be the most immediate of the three: it's a little bit Italo-disco, a little bit freestyle, and from its well-tempered analog sound design to its carefully crafted arrangement, it's clearly the work of someone who's been wrapping his head around the music for years.
